 Getting to Know Violeta

I had the distinct privilege of interviewing Violeta Aleman and hearing her story. Despite the fact that she is so young, Violeta has led an inspiring life that is packed with unique experiences. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to share her story with you.

guanajuatoenglishVioleta was born and raised in Guanajuato, Mexico. There was no electricity, no running water, and no roads to connect the village to “civilization”. Violeta migrated to the United States at the age of thirteen with her family.  They settled in the small town of Nichols, Iowa in September of 1995 and Violeta spent her teenage years living there.

After she graduated high school in 2001, Violeta attended Iowa State University for her undergraduate degree, against her family’s wishes. Violeta took advantage of the study abroad opportunities offered at Iowa State.  She spent a semester in Costa Rica to improve her writing in Spanish, a summer in Mexico working at an internship, a travel course in Spain, and a seminar on becoming a global citizen that took place in Germany and Austria.  She graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business and International Agriculture, a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a minor in Spanish. Upon graduation, she entered the workforce.

Violeta is currently working towards her Master’s Degree  in Public Administration at Drake University while holding a job as a legal assistant at the Drake Legal Clinic, and assisting the Elder Law Clinic as well as the Transactional Business/Non-Profit Clinic, in addition to continuing her work with a clinic attorney on the immigration cases that were started in 2011.  She plans to attend law school in the near future.
